Synopsis
The story starts with an enormous volcanic eruption, sending columns of fire into the night. In the south east asian waters, a schooner rides over stormy waves. The crew is unable to control the boat. CAPTAIN MURPHY is so drunk that he can't control his crew. And the only one that is able to stand on his two feet is BOB, ships lackey. Bob helps Captain Murphy as much as he can, but between the two of them they're not able to get the ship under control. An enormous wave hits the boat and the two of them are carried out to sea.
Murphy comes out of his unconscious state and finds himself with Bob in a lifeboat. Totally ashamed of his desertion, he grieves for his and Bobs condition. Through the morning mist, the two are able to make out the silhouette of a another boat in the distance and they row fiercely toward it. But sadly for them the boat turns out to be a pirate ship, "The Tiburon". The captain of the ship is the sinister KRAFFA, and old arch enemy of Murphy's and his second in command is the unscrupulous SILKINS.
Kraffa throws Murphy and Bob in the brig, humiliating them in every way that he can. Silkins, Kraffa's disciple, continues enthusiastically with the job. Next to Murphy and Bob are two more prisoners, ROSALIE, sixteen years old and MARGARET, seven. Both have been kidnapped by Kraffa after their boat went down in a storm. Kraffa dreams of the money he will get for them.
The ship's crew is made up mostly of superstitious ASIANS. Kraffa is going to stop for provisions on a nearby island and the asians are frightened to death of the palce, thinking that the island is inhabited by terrible monsters. Bob makes contact with LIN-FO, a chinese cook, a very strange and a funny character. Lin-fo is fed up with Kraffa and his devious ways and as the boat is goning to near Devil's Island, he has devised a way to escape taking al1 four captives with him.
That night, Lin-Fo mixes a sleeping potion into the soup which he promptly serves to Kraffa and Silkins and the rest of the crew. With everyone asleep, Bob and Lin-Fo go trough some pretty comical moves as they try to get to the keys that unlock the cells. In the end al1 comes out well and Bob, Murphy, Lin-Fo, Rosalie and Margaret escape in a small boat, but not before they hole the only other lifeboat on "The Tiburon".
Our fugitives row towards the island and once there arrive at a small abandoned village and choose what must have been the missionary's home to sleep in. There they begin to feel the tremors in the earth. In the morning the men go out to find provisions leaving the two sisters alone in the hut.
Captain Murphy is completely surprised when he sees "The Elizabeth", his boat, anchored in the bay. And even more so when he finds some of his men on the beach. Murphy and the sailors board a small boat and head off towards "The Elizabeth".
Meanwhile, Kraffa and Silkins have woken up, fixed the other boat and have reached the island. There they find the small village and surprise Margaret and Rosalie in the hut. They run off with Kraffa and Silkins on their heels. Our heroes, without knowing it are constantly watched by the islands dangerous cannibals.
Searching the island, Bob and Lin-Fo find an stone ido1 and not much further on an entrance to a cave. They enter and following winding passageways full of danger, they finally come out in a large open area. They find another ido1 similar to the first, but this one made of gold. All around the base of the idol, Bob and Lin-Fo find precious stones and more gold, a treasure of immense riches.
Kraffa and Silkins having lost the two sisters come up to the same cave and search it's passages. Bob and Lin-Fo hear them and hide. Kraffa and Silkins enter in the room with the ido1 and also find tyen treasure. After their initial joy, they start to fight over wich of them is the owner of the treasure. Lastly, Murphy and his men find the cave and the situation that occurs inside is extremely humorous, ending with Kraffa running out.
Outside he meets the cannibals and takes off running toward the beach. The cannibals enter and trying to protect their treasure take al1 the rest prisoners. At this moment the ceiling of the place comes down caused by another earth tremor.
The cannibals lead our heroes to their queen and she pronounces that a al1 must be sacrificed to save tue island from the volcano which loocks like it is going to erupt at any moment.
Silkins is the first to be fed to a horrible dragon-like creature that is kept behind a large bolder blocking the entrance to his den. When we hear his death screams al1 the rest are pushed in. Just at the moment when the dragon strikes, our heroes jump into an abyss and crash into the sea.
All find themselves in the water, and swim to the beach to find their boat. Rosalie notices that Lin-Fo isn't with them. Saddened they make it to the boat and start to row towards "The Elizabeth".
They hear someone yelling behind them and al1 turn to see Lin-Fo carrying a basket full of gold jewels with the cannibals hot on his heals. He makes it to the boat jumps in, almost capszing it and our furiously row away, al1 safe and sound and rich besides.
